The BBC N.Ireland Community Archive comprises archive material previously broadcast and collected by the BBC in Northern Ireland, from its beginnings in 1924 right through to the present day. At present the archive holds over 8,000 radio programmes, 500 cans of film, over 20,000 prints, slides and negatives of BBC N.Ireland programmes, local press releases and cuttings and a collection of BBC publications. In addition, the archive holds copies of all BBC N.Ireland radio news and current affairs output from 1990 onwards. The archive provides a valuable source of information on many aspects of the life and culture of the Province during the 20th century and BBC N.Ireland's role as a public service broadcaster.
The archive uses computerised databases to manage the archive and provide responses to queries.
In addition, details of many of the radio programmes appear in "The Radio Catalogue: BBC Northern Ireland Archives at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, compiled and edited by Grainne Loughran and Marian McCavana (Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, 1993).
The archive welcomes enquiries from bona fide researchers and interested members of the public. Access to material is for reference and research purposes only and can be arranged by prior appointment with the Broadcast Archivist. A listening facility is available, although copies of programmes cannot be provided due to copyright restrictions.
