Folk Collections

The Museum's Folk collections have provincial, national and international importance. Ambitiously, the Museum seeks to cover the whole range of the way of life and traditions of ordinary people living in Northern Ireland in both the past and present. As well as housing collections of artefacts, the Museum also has extensive archive collections of visual images, sound recordings, and written documents.

Some of its earliest archive-work was in the fields of language and photography, and the Museum contains extensive folkloric and oral history collections. From its inception, the Museum's collections existed not only to furnish the open-air museum and to display in galleries, but also to provide evidence for those who wanted to investigate the lives of people living in Northern Ireland.
