The corner shop was the mainstay of many urban communities, offering longer opening hours than bigger shops, and being convenient to where people lived. Very often the corner shop served a small number of streets so the shopkeeper knew his customers. He knew what they wanted and needed, what they would buy, and he knew who could and who couldn't be allowed to buy groceries on credit during the week with a promise of payment on pay-day.
As well as being a trading establishment, the corner shop was also the centre of local information and gossip, and the shopkeeper, with his knowledge of the area and its people could offer all kinds of advice.
