at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum

Programme for 2007-2008

Every year the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum offers classes and one-day workshops in a wide range of traditional arts and crafts. Where possible, items from the Museum’s collections are used as a basis for all the workshops. If you would like to learn a new craft or make more of your skills, you simply have to decide which course interests you and send the booking form back to us. If you would like more information, you can find out by attending our Crafts and Skills Day on Saturday 8 September 2007. Entry to the folk side of the Museum for this event is free on production of the token at the back of the Arts and Crafts leaflet.

This event provides a unique opportunity to view a wide range of traditional activities, crafts and skills in the authentic setting of the Museum’s early 1900’s town. This course will include Blackwork, a technique dating from the 15^th century and Hardanger – a Scandinavian form of Cutwork embroidery.

* The series of sewing workshops cover hand and machine work and will introduce beginners and experienced sewers to the enjoyment of sewing, with lots of ideas, new methods of construction and materials.

Are you part of a group of six or more people who would like to have one of our workshops but the date or time does not suit, or would you prefer just a half-day activity and then a visit round the Museum? General Information

Classes will normally be held in the new Education Centre located on the edge of the Town area of the Museum. Cars can be parked in the Town car park.. The Museum is served by Ulsterbus (Route 1, Belfast-Bangor). Bus stops are about a ten minute walk from the Town area.. For courses which run during normal Museum opening hours, Northern Ireland Railways’ service to Cultra Station (Belfast-Bangor line) is also available.

If the main entrance to the Folk Museum side is closed, please use the second entrance - the green gate at the bottom of the hill.

If a course is fully booked, applicants will be so advised and their names placed on a waiting list. Where possible, they will be offered vacancies that arise, or a place on an alternative date. If you need to cancel, please give notice of seven working days in order for us to make a full refund. Early booking is essential as we require a certain number of people for each course to run and if we don’t achieve this number a course may be cancelled. Places should be booked at least 2 weeks before start of course.

All classes and workshops are suitable for beginners and those with some experience except where otherwise stated. We will try, where possible, to have items from the Museum’s collections which will hopefully spark off ideas and designs. Kits and some materials can be purchased from tutors when necessary. Where specific materials are required, a list will be forwarded, otherwise please bring a basic sewing kit of scissors, needle, thread and some fabric for textile courses.

We are sorry if you are unable to attend all sessions but we can only accept the full fee or concessionary rate.

Full Fee - This fee should be paid by all students except those who fall into the category below.

Concessionary Fee (State Benefits) Those students who are wholly dependent upon state benefits, whether in the form of state pension, unemployment benefit, disability allowance or student grant, proof of which must be shown at time of booking.
