The Museum's extensive galleries illustrate the history of transport from primitive land transport predating the invention of the wheel to modern aircraft.
Highlights include exhibition on Titanic, the Rail and Road galleries and The Flight Experience.
Rail and Road Galleries
The Irish Railway Collection illustrates the development of railways in Ireland during the 19th century and their impact on Irish life. Notable exhibits include 'Maedb', the largest locomotive built or operated in Ireland and vehicles from the County Donegal Railways illustrating the contribution of narrow guage railways, particularly in the west of the country.
The Road Transport Galleries chart the development and impact of land transport, with major sections of the bicycle, the motorcycle and the motorcar.
The transport collections provide many opportunities for studies of technology, design, engineering and general science as well as social history.
The Museum's transport collections provide a wide range of opportunities for the study of such topics as the evolution of the wheel, suspension systems on horse-drawn vehicles and early motor cars, the hydro-electrically powered Giant's Causeway Tram, etc.
The bicycle exhibition illustrates the development of the bicycle - the fastest and most efficient form of man-powered transport ever produced. As technology improved, social attitudes changed and new materials became available, the bicycle changed from the hobby-horse of the early 1800s to the hi-tech bike of today.
General Transport Galleries - Early Transport
These galleries look at vehicles whose form predates the invention of the wheel. These early vehicles continued to be used in many parts of Ireland up to the 20th century as they best suited the conditions of the land and the needs of the people. This theme is continued with the development of wheeled vehicles, from farm carts to elegant carriages.
Titanic
Titanic was designed and built in Belfast at Harland and Wolff and tragically sank on her maiden voyage in 1912. Since then the ship and the disaster have fascinated people around the world. The Titanic Exhibition is permanently on display in the Transport gallery.
The Flight Experience
The Flight Experience is a new interactive exhibition on aviation, with particular reference to the contribution of Ireland's only, and the world's oldest manufacturer of aircraft, ardier Shorts.
